Train

Starting this first week I was looking forward to building on my previous knowledge I had learned from my previous Game Development course.

In my previous course I had used 3ds Max, a 3D modelling program I found easy to use and helped me understand the basics of 3D Modelling, but I believed it wasn’t a standard within the games industry so I was keen to learn something different such as Maya.

My first lesson with Maya was straight forward, we learned the interface and created some primitives and used a boolean tool, nothing I haven’t done before in 3ds Max.

After the first day We had homework to create a 3D model train using basic primitives, that I was able to do easily and you can see the finished model below.

Once I had completed this train model I decided I wanted to continue to try and learn more of the interface so I expanded on my original model adding more details.

I started with the wheel where I learned some tricks on how to select a loop of edges on a cylinder primitive so I could manipulate them as well as a loop of face’s.

I was also able to find and use the bevel tool, I used this tool to round off some of the edges on the wheels.

Above you can see the finished  model, along with the wheels I made some changes to the roof of the cab by manipulating the edges of the shape, and I added a bevel around the top of the smoke stack.

This first week I was able to remind my self of some of the tool I had used previously in 3ds Max and I hope future lessons will help me learn some new techniques.
